Above the clouds

Many of my students have a problem with syntax. Although they learn phrases and language chunks, not only words, they still  make mistakes while rearranging jumbled up sentences into meaningful ones.
To make such exercises more engaging and exciting, I created word clouds with seven sentences. At first I didn't know which online generator I should use. Eventually, I decided to use Wordle, as it can create word clouds with all the words. You just have to mark the option "Do not remove common words".

Girl's life

Last week my 6th graders revised present tenses. Grammar is not their idea of having fun, so I had to come up with some activities that will make it more enjoyable.
I have found cute pictures presenting girl's life and I have created a set of 24 picture cards and 12 word cards.
I divided the class into groups of four. Each student got one picture card. I had to make sure that they know the English phrases to describe the pictures. Then I picked up one word card and read it out loud. The students had to decide which tense they sould use and they had to write the correct sentence in their notebooks. Then they read their sentences one by one. They swapped pictures within their groups, I picked up another word card, and they wrote and read another sentence. We repeated this three times.
They said they liked the activity more than workbook grammar exercises. But what is more important, even the weakest students were able to create correct sentences on their own.

School is back

A new school year started two days ago, but it's hard to forget summer laziness. During my summer holidays I tried to relax a little bit, but I was also looking for some teaching inspiration.
And I found it :)



I just love their words hidden in pictures! I have printed 16 different pictures and I'm not afraid to use them in class :)


Working with young learners, I discovered I have to draw a lot and I have to draw well. Luckily Art for Kids Hub has a huge "How to draw" video archive.
I love visual aids, but I'm not that good at drawing. I found a great site with a lot of high quality images for teaching English.

This year I want to focus on speaking and fluency, so I decided to change my classroom arrangement.
I will write a little bit more about it in my next post.

A leprechaun's pot of gold

What would you do with your three wishes, if you caught a leprechaun? Is there a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow?
I asked my students these questions today. We also talked about St. Patrick and Irish celebrations.
I wanted them to have some fun, so I printed out St. Patrick's Day photo booth props (a rainbow mask, a pot of gold, a green hat, a red beard etc.) that I've found at the Dating Divas and Masketeers.


I divided each class into small groups (5-7 students), so it was easier to take photos.

Wiggle eyes are so cool!

Everything can be fun if you make it funny! 
During my last trip to Warsaw I bought a pack of wiggle eye rings. And I found them very useful in practicing everyday pharases with my younger studens. 
I decided to put into practice an idea of my friend, Jolanta Okuniewska.
Yesterday I asked a group of my students to take some photos of their hands wearing the wiggle eye rings.


Then they used Befunky.com to edit the photos. They added glasses, hair, moustaches etc. And they also added speach bubbles with everyday phrases. Here's the result:




We only had one camera and one computer, so some of my students were a little bit impatient waiting for their turn. I wish I had some tablets at school, so they could work in pairs. Anyway, we had a great time!

I love ClassDojo

I've been using ClassDojo for a few months. My students love it, their parents love it, and I love it, too!
Just a couple of weeks ago ClassDojo started to publish a five episode video series about growing mindset. Each episode presents important lessons on how everyone can grow their intelligence.
I watched them with my students and we dicussed them.
I decided to sum up the ideas presented in the series. And I used a new tool called Slate.

Roll an animal

Describing wild animals can be fun, but kids can have more fun while describing strange animals. It's even better when it's a game.
All you need is a dice, crayons and a piece of paper.


Yesterday I divided my 3rd-graders into pairs. Each pair got one dice. Each student had to roll twice. They roll an animal on the first roll and a body part on the second roll. Then they drew what they'd rolled.


At first they didn't get it, as it was quite an unusual exercise. But then they created amazing animals and even described them in English.
